S. Kubrick, Part I

So I've been slowly working through the films of Stanley Kubrick thanks to the Stanley Kubrick Essential Collection on DVD. It packs a wallop of films from Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and Clockwork Orange to Barry Lyndon, Shinning, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. These are all his movies from the 60's on. I guess the 50's don't count, or are not "essential", oh well.

I figured I'd share my thoughts on the films I've worked my way through so far and give out an arbitrary score. I've yet to see Barry Lyndon & Eyes Wide Shut and I want to give Full Metal Jacket a rewatch (it's been a while) before I give out thoughts on those, but the rest I'm pretty stable on.

Spartacus
In this film, Spartacus drowns a man in soup. That's all I have to say about that. If that doesn't sound appealing, then this isn't the movie for you.

Score: A-

Lolita
Kinda disappointed there wasn't as much sexy behavior as advertised. I guess I shouldn't get all my information about movies from fifty years ago.

Score: B

Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Not as funny as I expected, but it was still a hell of a good time. Even though Strangelove was only in the movie for four scenes and spoke in two of those.

Score: B

2001: A Space Odyssey
Very slow, but very good. It's one of the finest head trips I've ever had the pleasure to experience. HAL-9000 steals the whole damn movie.

Score: A

A Clockwork Orange
Welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, welly, well. To what do I owe the extreme pleasure of this surprising good viddy? I've got me yarbles all a slooshied, but I'm a bit shagged and fagged and fashed, it being a night of no small expenditure, so let's move on.

Score: A+

The Shining
You remember when I said let's move on? Let's keep doing that.

Score: B+

And that's it for now. So far it looks like my favorite is Clockwork Orange, no surprise there my droogs, but Full Metal Jacket may just top that. I also have high hopes for Eyes Wide Shut being a fan of Tom Cruise and seeing Nicole Kidman in the nude. Barry Lyndon is a wild card and I have no idea what the hell it's about or what the hell is going on in it, so that'll be fun. Part II coming soon!
